How many weeks are in a year?
A year has 52 weeks and one or two days left over, which is why some years get a 53rd week. Here is the rule, and which years are long.
The short answer
A year has 52 weeks, plus a day or two that do not make a whole week. 365 divided by 7 is 52 remainder 1; a leap year leaves a remainder of 2. Those spare days accumulate, and every five or six years they add up to a whole extra week. A year that gets one has 53 weeks.
Why the extra week appears
Under ISO 8601, the international standard that Europe uses, a week always runs Monday to Sunday and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. Equivalently: week 1 is the week holding 4 January. That rule has a consequence people notice every January — the first few days of a year can still belong to the previous year's last week, and the last days of December can already belong to the next year's week 1.
A year has 53 weeks when 1 January falls on a Thursday, or when it falls on a Wednesday in a leap year. In both cases there is room for 53 Thursdays, and every Thursday needs a week to sit in.
Which years have 53 weeks
| Year | Weeks | 1 January is a | Week 1 starts |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 52 | Monday | January 1, 2024 |
| 2025 | 52 | Wednesday | December 30, 2024 |
| 2026 | 53 | Thursday | December 29, 2025 |
| 2027 | 52 | Friday | January 4, 2027 |
| 2028 | 52 | Saturday | January 3, 2028 |
| 2029 | 52 | Monday | January 1, 2029 |
| 2030 | 52 | Tuesday | December 31, 2029 |
| 2031 | 52 | Wednesday | December 30, 2030 |
| 2032 | 53 | Thursday | December 29, 2031 |
| 2033 | 52 | Saturday | January 3, 2033 |
| 2034 | 52 | Sunday | January 2, 2034 |
| 2035 | 52 | Monday | January 1, 2035 |
Of the twelve years above, 2 are long: 2026, 2032. The pattern is not regular — long years come at gaps of five or six — which is why it is easier to look the year up than to work it out.
What it means in practice
For most people the 53rd week matters once: when a plan, a rota or a payroll run assumes 52. Weekly-paid staff get a 53rd pay run in a long year. Rotas built on an even number of weeks fall out of step. Annual reports that compare "week 40 this year" with "week 40 last year" are comparing different parts of the season, because the weeks have shifted by one.
The other thing worth knowing is that a date near New Year can belong to a week in the other year. 1 January 2027 falls in week 53 of 2026, not week 1 of 2027. A system that stores "week 1, 2027" for a job done on 1 January 2027 has recorded the wrong week.
Common questions
- How many weeks are in a year exactly?
- 52 weeks and 1 day in a common year, 52 weeks and 2 days in a leap year. Because a week cannot be split, the ISO calendar gives some years 53 whole weeks instead.
- How many weeks are left in the year?
- Divide the days remaining by seven. Our week-number page shows the current week and the whole year at a glance.
- Do all countries number weeks the same way?
- No. Europe follows ISO 8601, which starts weeks on Monday. The United States commonly starts them on Sunday and counts the week containing 1 January as week 1.
